PTSN IDSN Switch Off

2025 is when Openreach’s Analogue (PSTN) and Digital ISDN Network will be switched off and the new IP Network replaces these legacy services. HBT Communications believe that you need to know what the impact is for your business and we believe it best to act on this in good time to ensure your business is migrated to the new services and you receive the additional benefits that are available to you with the migration.

PSTN & ISDN Switch Off Timeline

What services are affected?

Anything that uses a copper line. The easiest way to comprehend the extent of the switch off is to consider that every single Openreach service utilising copper lines will be affected. The most apparent services are analogue telephone lines (PSTN) and digital lines (ISDN), however, it’s not just about telephone services. Any service that uses this legacy network will be impacted.
• Analogue voice telephone services and any service that use these lines including dial-up devices, fax, alarm systems, modem, building management systems, lift lines and PDQ machines.
• ISDN 2e and ISDN 30e lines which are mainly used by phone systems.
• Broadband services that run over an analogue telephone line e.g. ADSL which also includes FTTC Fibre Broadband the perception is that FTTC is Fibre, however this connection also uses copper into your building and therefore this needs to be addressed.

What is happening and when will it be happening?

Openreach will be switching off services at each exchange. The first stage will be an announcement for a “stop sell” date for each individual exchange in 2023. After this date no new services can be ordered and you will not be able to amend anything on the existing service.
Openreach announced that September 2020 was the date that orders for the legacy network were ceased, all new supply of WLR will no longer be sold in 2023 and 2025 is the date the switch off project ends and your business must be on the new IP Network.
HBT Communications recommend that if your business are using any of the legacy services that now would be a good time to explore your options, our experienced consultants will offer you impartial advice and solutions to help migrate your business across to the new platform and in doing so your business will be able to benefit from.
